Jahrbuch 2012-2013
41 Schule On the first of March, 2013, the International Students were treated to a weekend in Berlin. We departed from Schloss Neubeuern at 7 o’ clock in the morning for the 8 hour drive after which we finally arrived at the capital and grate- fully settled at our accommodations, the Hostel Metropol. We would spend the next few days experiencing the German culture and history as made manifest by the many features of the great city. Our first experience was to be the illustri- ous musical, ‘Tanz der Vampire’, on the evening of our arrival. While not all of us (especially the South Africans) fully understood the dialogue in the performance, I think it´s safe to say that we all enjoyed the spectacle. Saturday was spent touring the city. Starting from the Brandenburger Tor, we continued to traverse the city, receiving a tour of the Reichs- tag and the famous glass dome that crests it, a walk-through of the Jewish memorial and a visit to the interactive DDR museum. Sunday turned out to be another day of touring the city, starting with the massively fa- mous East-Side Gallery on which many famous artworks are displayed. On par with the theme, we made our way to several more of the exhi- bitions dealing with the division of Berlin. The more modern parts of the city were shown to us on a boat tour along the canals of Berlin, af- ter which we made a final stop at the Nazi me- morial before returning, as every tourist must, to our accommodations. As the last note in the symphony, we were treated to dinner and a show, ending what had already been a full day off with a choice between two highly popular films: ‘Django Unchained’ and ‘Les Miserables’. Sunday morning marked the end of a truly great tour in one of the World’s most fascina- ting cities (as well as an 8 hour drive back to the Schloss). Berlin had been an unforgettable experience; a wonderful memory. Fahrt Internationale Abteilung Berlin 1.-2. März 2013 http://www.eastsidegallery-berlin.de/
